| It was a gorgeous mid-July morning on the banks of the Skeena River in northern British Columbia with my rod in the rod holder when suddenly the rod started bouncing wildly. I grabbed the rod the flung it backwards to set the hook. The 40 lb. chinook or spring salmon was pulling line down river at a quick pace. I tightened up the tension and it still pulled frantically as I burnt my thumb trying to slow the line down. It was a fresh, silver fish as tidewater is only ten miles downriver. I let the bail go free and the fish finally stopped and started upstream. I reeled quickly to catch up and it was still on. The chinook pulled away again and again as the ten foot rod bent over with the action. As the fish became tired along with me it started coming in easier until the fight was over after half and hour. My arms were like rubber from the powerful action on my rod. |
